What Is Reaction Time?
Reaction time is the interval between the presentation of a stimulus and the initiation of a response. In this test, it measures the time between the screen turning green and your click. It is a direct measure of how quickly your nervous system processes information and triggers a motor response.
What Is a Normal Reaction Time?
The average human reaction time to a visual stimulus is approximately 250 milliseconds (ms). Elite athletes and professional gamers often achieve reaction times below 200ms. Reaction time naturally slows with age, beginning around age 30, and can be significantly impaired by fatigue, alcohol, and distraction.
How to Improve Your Reaction Time
Reaction time can be improved through regular practice, adequate sleep, proper hydration, and physical exercise. Studies show that aerobic exercise can improve reaction time by up to 20ms. Caffeine in moderate doses (100-200mg) can also provide a temporary boost of around 10ms.
Factors That Affect Reaction Time
Multiple factors influence reaction time including age (peaks in mid-20s), sleep deprivation (can add 50-100ms), alcohol consumption, stress levels, and the type of stimulus. Visual reaction time is typically slower than auditory reaction time by about 20-40ms.
